My work as an urban planner is a critical frame of reference for my documentary films. Motivated by a desire to debunk common perceptions, I try to give a voice to people rarely heard in public debates. Both of my films, Made in Brooklyn and Brooklyn Matters take on issues that have resonance for cities across the country.
The importance of keeping and increasing the manufacturing segment of our economy is hard to exaggerate. It still yields many people great satisfaction and reliable livelihoods. Made in Brooklyn helps to bring to light the critical and unique source of employment that manufacturing brings and to capitalize on what works instead of cataloging what doesn’t. Likewise, Brooklyn Matters shows a positive path to appropriately planned urban change. It poses vital questions about government-sponsored projects and the need for real urban planning and full transparency, particularly when taxpayer dollars are involved.
Finding truth in this age of public relations machines, dazzling promotions, and powerful private interests is a challenge but it is critical to preserving the democratic process and ensuring everyone has a choice to help shape the future of our communities.
“It can be difficult to clearly communicate to the public the relevant details and urgency of such a complex and fraught project. For this reason, Brooklyn Matters is particularly welcome; the film is a clarion call on an issue of great significance.”
-Richard Moe, President, National Trust for Historic Preservation
“Lays bare many of the challenges facing our nation’s cities today, but none so compelling as the threat to democracy. Who benefits? Who pays? Most importantly, who decides?
-Gregory D. Squires, Professor of Sociology, Public Policy and Administration, George Washington University
“No subject could be more important …not only for New York, but for all American cities. This is the most lucid explanation of America’s economic self-crippling and the direction to take to overcome it.”
-Jane Jacobs, Author, The Death and Life of Great American Cities
“A love letter to the people who make New York crackle.”
-Village Voice
“I screened your documentary with admiration. We don’t see many films like this and I wish we did.”
-Bill Moyers, Author, TV Host
